Internship Position Description
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Harrisonburg Field Office covers the Counties of Rockingham and Page, and the City of Harrisonburg. Under the direction of the SWCD Board of Directors and under the supervision of the SWCD District and NRCS staff, the unpaid intern will assist staff with coordination and implementation of a variety of conservation work, including but not limited to: site visits, field work, review and implementation of various conservation projects and programs. The Shenandoah Valley Soil and Water Conservation District offers Fall and Spring internship opportunities, as well as various opportunities for the Summer.
TYPICAL ACTIVITIES & EXPERIENCES
- Participate in site visits with technical staff to discuss and examine water quality concerns
- Learn about the effectiveness and feasibility of Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- Learn about and assist with necessary paperwork associated with the design and implementation of BMPs
- Learn about and assist with record keeping and documentation associated with projects and programs
- Assist with coordination and implementation of various SVSWCD and NRCS projects and programs
- Learn about and work with cooperating agencies and partners
- Assist with and learn about other tasks and projects
REQUIREMENTS
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student at a college or university at the time of Internship.
- Ability to work outdoors during adverse weather conditions
- Accommodations can be made if intern’s ability to work outdoors is restricted
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships in a team environment
- Willingness to complete the “Volunteer Services Agreement for Natural Resources Agencies” form
- Ability to successfully complete federal background check and other needed paperwork
- Ability to keep track of hours worked
- Ability to provide own transportation to District office and other sites when necessary
COMPENSATION
- Unpaid position
- Upon successful completion of the internship, students are eligible to apply for an SVSWCD intern scholarship
